Having honed his skills at London based Levy Sound and Oriole studios, Geoff Frost and Sound Engineer John Wood opened Sound Techniques during the winter of 1964. The studios were housed within a converted cow shed in Old Church Street, Chelsea and soon went on to become one of the country's first independent professional music recording studios.

Between 1964-74, some of the era's finest artists recorded there including; The Who, Nick Drake, Elton John, The Yardbirds, Fairport Convention, Sandy Denny, John Cale. And famously Pink Floyd, who recorded their first ever professional studio sessions there, including legendary track Interstellar Overdrive.

Soon after the studio opened, word of the 'Sound Techniques sound' spread to London's other independent studios, with this in mind Geoff designed and built the first customised Sound Techniques mixing desk, “the A Range”. By 1965 Kingsway studio in Aldwych had purchased the first customised desk stamped with the 'Sound Techniques' brand name.

After the first desk was sold to Kingsway, Trident Studio's swiftly followed suit and purchased a desk which was used to record the Beatles, Hey Jude and several of The White Album tracks, including; Martha My Dear and Dear Prudence. For the next ten years Sound Techniques desks were shipped out all over the world from Hollywood to Jamaica. Studios including De Lane Lea and Elektra brought desks along with Sunset Sound in Hollywood who bought a Sound Techniques desk specifically to capture the full intensity of The Doors.

Other artists that recorded on Sound Techniques desks, Mic amps or Mixers over the years include legendary artists such as The Beatles, David Bowie, Elton John, The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Animals, T-Rex, Lulu and Queen.

Hot on the heels of the success of the A-Range, Geoff designed and built the System 12, it was the first compact 8-track desk in the world and it signified an important breakthrough in studio recording technology, enabling small studios to record on desks that previously, due to their size, had only been available to the big boys.

By 1974, the lease had run out on the Chelsea studio and the bottom had fallen out of the music industry. Geoff formed STL which saw the company take a new direction into Computers and Software Development, an area in which they have excelled for the past 25 years. Now, more than thirty years since the studio closed its doors. Sound Techniques has come full circle. With the original founder Geoff Frost at the helm, Sound Techniques Studio has been re-born and will be producing a series of music DVD's. First in the series is Guitar Maestros, featuring UK guitarists including:

Martin Simpson
Michael Messer
Big Jim Sullivan
